Folks artist’s do the job on exhibit in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD — Born on the Fourth of July in 1900, Nellie Mae Rowe spent the initially half of her lifetime working — as a lady on her family’s farm in Fayette County, Georgia, then as a spouse, two times widowed, and as a domestic.  

But in the late 1950s, soon after both of those her husbands ended up gone and the white couple she cleaned for also passed absent, Nellie Mae was no cost to commit herself to her enthusiasm:  producing art.

“Now I obtained to get again to my childhood,” explained the self-taught, African American artist. “What you get in touch with actively playing in a playhouse.”

Not only did she recreate a girlhood for herself in her colorful drawings, she turned her property in Vinings, Ga, into a playhouse embellished with identified-item installations, dolls, chewing gum sculptures and hundreds of drawings. An Atlanta-spot newspaper called it an “explosion of creativity.”
