Four years’ value of GG visual arts award winners feted at Rideau Hall

Two members of the artist collective FASTWÜRMS, one of eight winners of this year’s Governor General’s Awards in Visible and Media Arts, remembered their roots increasing up in Ottawa as “art nerds” who hung out at the Countrywide Gallery of Canada.

At the Nationwide Gallery, artwork by this year’s winners is dispersed throughout the building. FASTWÜRMS’ set up, Rainbow Volcano Atoll #2, which is composed of brightly colored tapestries and ceramic objects, is positioned in an enclosed area in the lower modern galleries. Other winners’ works can be uncovered in the Canadian and Indigenous galleries, European and American galleries and the rotunda. The exhibition continues until finally March 3.

Other 2023 winners involve: Evergon, Germaine Koh, Tim Whiten and filmmakers Shannon Walsh and Nettie Wild, even though Grace Nickel obtained the Saidye Bronfman Award for wonderful craft, and Metis artist, writer and curator David Garneau gained the fantastic contribution award. 

When requested about the significance of the award for FASTWÜRMS, Skuse described it as a whole-circle story that also supplied “proof of concept” of the price of exposing children to artwork.
