The Toronto Reel Asian Intercontinental Film Festival kicked off on Wednesday night with the opening movie The Queen of My Desires, the debut characteristic movie by Canadian filmmaker Fawzia Mirza.

The Queen of My Goals tells the tale of a younger queer Canadian woman (Amrit Kaur) and her partnership to her Pakistani Muslim mother in the wake of her father’s unexpected death, borrowing from the colourful imagery of Bollywood musicals, for which the two ladies have a shared love. The movie will be launched in early 2024.

This year’s Reel Asian competition features a selection of movies that take a look at loved ones interactions and intergenerational dynamics as a result of genre cinema, according to Aram Siu Wai Collier, creative director at the Reel Asian pageant.
